Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office XP on a computer.
  • You install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats on the computer.
  • You have a file that is saved in an Office Open XML Formats file format.
  • The file is hosted on a Web server.
  • You open the file from somewhere other than the Web server. For example, you click a hyperlink in an e-mail message to open the file. Alternatively, you click a hyperlink in another document to open the file.
After you edit and then save the file, you do not receive an error message. However, when you click the hyperlink again to open the file, your edits are not displayed.

Cause

When you open the file, Microsoft Internet Explorer starts the appropriate application and then downloads the file to an incorrect location. Internet Explorer downloads the file to the Temporary Internet Files folder. Any changes to the file are saved only to the file in the Temporary Internet Files folder. Changes to the file are not saved to the original file on the Web server.
