Microsoft Windows 9x client computers may not automatically download and install network printer drivers from a Windows Server 2003 network

Symptoms

Client computers that are running any of the following operating systems on a Windows Server 2003 network may not be able to automatically download and install network printer drivers from the server:
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 95
Important The preceding list of operating systems are called Windows 9x in the rest of this article.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a problem in the way Windows 9x installs network printer drivers.

Note This problem affects only Windows 9x client computers that are members of a Windows Server 2003 cluster network.

Workaround

To work around this issue, store the driver for the network printer on a network share, and then specify this location when you install the network printer driver on Windows 9x client computers.
