Method 1: Change the default mail client to Microsoft Outlook

To do this on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Programs tab.
  4. In the E-mail box, select Microsoft Outlook.
  5. Click OK.
To do this on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Programs tab.
  4. In the Internet programs section, click on the Set programs button.
  5. Click on the Set your default programs link.
  6. Select email application in the listing of programs, and then click on the Set this program as default link.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Close the Choose the programs that Windows uses by default window.
  9. Click OK.

Method 2: Verify the registry settings

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
  1. Close all your open programs in Microsoft Windows.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Locate and then click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem registry key.
  5. You should have the following registry values listed in the
    Windows Messaging Subsystem
    key:
    NameTypeData
    MAPIREG_SZ1
    CMCREG_SZ1
    CMCDLLNAMEREG_SZMapi.dll
    CMCDLLNAME32REG_SZMapi32.dll
    MAPIXREG_SZ1
    MAPIXVERREG_SZ1.0.0.1
    OLEMessagingREG_SZ1
  6. If any one of the registry values are missing in the
    Windows Messaging Subsystem
key of the registry, follow these steps to add the values:
    1. With the
      Windows Messaging Subsystem
key selected, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click String Value.
    2. Type the name of the value that is missing from your registry as it is listed in the table that is in step 5, and then press ENTER.
    3. With the value from step 6b selected, click Modify on the Edit menu.
    4. In the Value data box of the Edit String dialog box, type the value for the missing string value.
    5. Repeat steps 6a to 6d for each value that is missing from the table that is in step 5.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit.
Most Office programs display the e-mail options automatically if the required registry keys are present. If your Office program does not display the e-mail options after you complete these steps, you must add the e-mail options to your Office program.
To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.
  2. On the Commands tab, click File in the Categories list.
  3. In the Commands list, click the command that you want (such as Mail Recipient), and then drag the command to the File menu.
  4. Click Close to close the Customize dialog box.

More information

Earlier versions of Microsoft Office use both the registry and the Win.ini file for MAPI information. Office 2003 and Office 2007 only use the registry for MAPI information.
