Microsoft Exchange Information Store service stops responding when a store event sink runs in Exchange 2000 Server

Symptoms

On your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (Store.exe) crashes when a store event sink runs in Exchange 2000 Server. When this problem occurs, you cannot send or receive e-mail messages.

Cause

This problem may occur when you install a program on the Exchange 2000 computer that makes an Exchange store event sink run.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, obtain the August 2004 Exchange 2000 Server Post-Service Pack 3 update rollup.

More information

A store event sink in Exchange is code that is used to respond programmatically to an event that occurs in the Exchange store. The store event sink runs on the server in response to changes in the data in the Exchange store. For example, a store event sink may run when an item is saved or deleted. Or, a store event sink may run when the store event sink is triggered by a timer event or by a system event.

This problem has been reported to sometimes occur when you use Network Associates SpamKiller for Microsoft Exchange antispam software product on an Exchange 2000 computer. The store event sink that SpamKiller uses occasionally makes calls that cause the problem that is described in this article to occur.
