To resolve this behavior, use method 1 to clean the CD-ROM. If that does not succeed, use method 2.
Method 1: Clean the CD-ROM
When you clean a CD-ROM, it is important not to damage the surface. Clean your CD-ROM with a commercially available CD-ROM cleaner and scratch remover, or use a clean, soft, cotton cloth. To clean the CD-ROM with a clean, soft, cotton cloth, follow these steps:
- Hold the CD-ROM by placing your index finger in the center hole and your thumb on the outside edge.
- Hold the CD-ROM with the read surface (the shiny side) up, and then breathe onto the CD-ROM so that your breath fogs the surface.
- Wipe the fogged area of the disc with the soft cloth, in a straight line, from the center of the disc to the outside edge.
- Repeat steps 1 through 3 until the whole surface is clean.
- When the CD-ROM is clean, put it into your CD-ROM drive, and then try to install Office 2000. If you receive the error message, go to the next method.
Method 2: Run Setup with the DONOTMIGRATEUSERSETTINGS=True Command
If an earlier version of Office has been removed, some files that the Office 2000 installer has to have may have been removed or corrupted. As a result, the Setup program cannot migrate settings from the earlier version of Office. To install Office 2000 without migrating settings from an earlier version of Office, follow these steps:
- Put the Office 2000 installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
- At the command prompt, type
D:\SETUP.EXE DONOTMIGRATEUSERSETTINGS=True
where D is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, and then press ENTER.
