Excel stops responding when you type an invalid password to a linked workbook

Symptoms

When you click a hyperlink to a password-protected workbook, but you type the wrong password, the workbook does not open and Microsoft Office Excel appears to stop responding. You cannot use the keyboard to move between cells, and you cannot type data directly in cells.

Workaround

To prevent this problem from occurring if you type an incorrect password, click Cancel when you receive the following message:
Opening File name
Some files can contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that this file is from a trustworthy source.

Would you like to open this file?
To work around this problem after Excel stops responding, follow these steps:
  1. Move the mouse pointer over the File menu, and click once.

    The hourglass pointer disappears.
  2. On the File menu, click Exit.
  3. If you want to save any open files, do so when prompted.
  4. Restart Microsoft Excel.
