To work around this problem, follow these steps in the order presented.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
Remove Office
First, you must uninstall Office from your computer.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, double-click the entry for your Office 2000 product.
- In the Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Remove Office.
- Click Yes to confirm the uninstall.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type Regedit and then click OK.
- Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\LV
- Rename the LV key to LVOld.
- On the Registry menu, click Exit.
Create an Administrative Installation
Next, you must create an administrative installation on your hard disk. Make sure that your computer has at least 650 MB of free disk space on the disk for which you are creating the administrative installation.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following, and then click OK:
path\Setup.exe /a
NOTE: Path is the path to your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Office CD-ROM. - In the Customer Information dialog box, type the CD key from the back of the Office CD-ROM case.
- Click Next.
- In the License and Support Information dialog box, accept the license agreement, and then click Next.
- In the Installation Location dialog box, specify the destination folder for the administrative installation. For example, you can specify C:\Off2KAdmin.
- Click Install Now.
Install Office from the Administrative Installation
After the administrative installation is finished, you must install Office from the folder that you specified in step 6 of the "Create an Administrative Installation" section. Do not install Office from your Office CD; otherwise the same problem occurs with the Office Registration Wizard.
- Open the folder that you specified in step 6 of the "Create an Administrative Installation" section of this article.
- Double-click Setup.exe.
- Type your personal information in the Customer Information dialog box, and then click Next.
- In the Ready to Install dialog box, click Install Now, or click Customize if you want to customize the Office installation.
- When the Office installation is finished, start any one of the Office programs. This time, you are not prompted to register Office, so you do not encounter the same problem with the Office Registration Wizard.
Delete the Administrative Installation
After you successfully install Office from the administrative installation, if you want to you can delete the folder that contains the administrative installation. This frees disk space, and the Windows Installer allows you to use your Office CD for any repair operations or "install on first use" operations.
To use the Office CD after you delete the administrative installation, follow these steps:
- Click Browse when the Windows Installer displays the following error message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
- Insert your Office CD.
- In the Look in list, select your CD-ROM drive.
- Select Data1.msi and then click Open.
- Click OK in the Windows Installer dialog box that prompts you for an Office source location.
From this point forward, the Windows Installer uses your CD-ROM drive as the location for the Office source files. This situation is not any different than it would be if you originally installed Office from CD.
