The "Smart Tag" indicator does not appear in merged cells in Excel 2002

Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel, you type text in a cell that should cause the Smart Tag cell indicator to appear in the lower right corner of the cell, When you do this, the Smart Tag cell indicator does not appear.

For example, when you type a stock symbol, the Smart Tag cell indicator does not appear. However, if you point to or select the cell, the Smart Tag button appears as expected.

Cause

This behavior can occur when you enter data in a merged cell.

Resolution

To make a Smart Tag cell indicator appear, force the cell into edit mode. To do this, do one of the following:
Double-click the cell.
Select the cell and then pressing F2.
When you leave the cell, the Smart Tag cell indicator appears.
