"ApplicationExperienceInfrastructure" warning when you try to install the Directory Sync tool in Windows Server 2012

Problem

When you try to install the Windows Azure Active Directory Sync tool on a computer that's running Windows Server 2012, the installation doesn't finish. Additionally, the following warning message is logged in the Application log in Event Viewer:
ApplicationExperienceInfrastructure

The application (Microsoft SQL Server (2008 and 2008 R2), from vendor Microsoft) has the following problems: Microsoft SQL Server (2008 and 2008 R2) is not supported on this version of Windows. For more information, contact Microsoft.
This issue occurs when you try to install an older version of the Directory Sync tool.

Solution

Install the latest version of the Directory Sync tool. It's available at Install or upgrade the Directory Sync tool.
