Symptoms

In Microsoft Excel, when you attempt to e-mail a worksheet, you may receive an error message similar to the following
A sheet in the workbook you are trying to save is password protected. Password protected sheets cannot be saved in a Web page. To save this file as a Web page, you must first remove the password.
even though you were not attempting to save the document before sending it as an e-mail message. Additionally, the worksheet is not successfully e-mailed.

Cause

This behavior can occur when you attempt to e-mail an Excel worksheet that is password-protected. The message appears for two reasons:
  • You cannot e-mail password-protected worksheets.

  • Even though you are not trying to save the spreadsheet, the spreadsheet must be temporarily saved as a Web page before it can be e-mailed.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the password protection from the worksheet before you attempt to send it as an e-mail message, or send the entire workbook as an attachment.

To remove password protection, follow these steps:
  1. In Microsoft Office Excel 2007, click the Review tab, and then click Unprotect Sheet in the Changes group.

In Microsoft Office Excel 2003 and in earlier versions of Excel, point to Protection on the Tools menu, and then click Unprotect Sheet.
  2. In the Unprotect Sheet dialog box, type the password, and then click OK.
