Data corruption occurs when a user updates a shared file on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You share a file on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • Multiple users that are using multiple remote computers open the file by using the Server Message Block (SMB) Version 2 protocol.
  • One of the users updates the file.
In this scenario, data corruption may occur in the file.

Note By default, the following operating systems use the SMB Version 2 protocol:
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2008

Cause

This issue occurs because the SMB redirector (Mrxsmb20.sys) incorrectly reports the position of the end of the file. Therefore, an application may unknowingly request to write to an incorrect location. This behavior causes data corruption.
