Symptoms

When you try to use the Import spreadsheet option in Site actions�to upload a Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheet to Microsoft SharePoint Online, you receive the following error message:
The specified file is not a valid spreadsheet or contains no data to import.

Cause

This issue can occur if the SharePoint Online URL was not added to�Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, add the SharePoint Online site to Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
  2. On the Security tab, complete one of the following actions:
    • For private sites that use https authentication, select Trusted Sites, select Sites, and then add the SharePoint site to the trusted sites lists.
    • For public sites that use https authentication, select Local Intranet, select Sites, and then click Advanced. Add the SharePoint site to the trusted sites lists.
