Symptoms

When you run Setup for Office, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you see text similar to the following:
IE5WZD caused an invalid page fault in module MSSIP32.DLL at 015f:7b4f2440
When you click Close, the error message goes away, and the Microsoft Office 2000 Setup dialog box (with CD key boxes) is displayed.

  • An incorrect version of the Imagehlp.dll file is installed.
  • Your computer is running on Microsoft Windows 98.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. If the Microsoft Office 2000 Setup dialog box (with CD key boxes) is still displayed, click Cancel.
  2. Click Yes to the prompt that confirms your choice to quit Setup, and then click OK.
  3. In the \Windows\System folder, rename the Imagehlp.dll file to Imagehlp.old.
  4. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type a command line similar to the following:
    path\msi\instmsi.exe /c /t:c:\msifiles
where path is the path to your Office Setup files. For example, if you are using an Office 2000 CD, this is your CD-ROM drive letter. This expands the contents of the Instmsi.exe package into the C:\msifiles folder.
  5. Copy Imagehlp.dll from the C:\msifiles folder into your \Windows\System folder.
  6. Run Office Setup.
NOTE: If you run Office Setup with a command line similar to the following, the error message in the "Symptoms" section of this article does not appear (even with the incorrect version of the Imagehlp.dll file):
path\Setup NOIE=true
where path is the full path to your Office Setup files. However, if you use NOIE=true on the command line when you install Office, Internet Explorer is not updated to version 5.0.
