Shared OneNote notebooks can't synchronize correctly with SharePoint Online

Symptoms

When you try to synchronize Microsoft OneNote notebooks with Microsoft SharePoint Online, the synchronization fails.

Cause

This issue occurs because an update is required for OneNote users who share notebooks on SharePoint Online. If you do not install this update, some shared OneNote notebooks cannot synchronize correctly with SharePoint Online. This update is not installed by the Office 365 Desktop Setup Tool.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must download and install one of the following OneNote updates for Microsoft Office, as appropriate for the version of Office that you are running.

32-bit version of Office 2010

64-bit version of Office 2010
