Symptoms

When you run the released version of Office 2000 Setup with Office Beta 2 installed on the computer, you do not receive a warning to remove the beta software. You should receive the following error message:
Setup has detected a pre-release version of an Office 2000 family application installed on this computer. You must exit setup and uninstall the pre-release software before you install this released version. If you choose Continue, Office 2000 may not install properly.

Cause

This message does not appear in the following exceptions.

Exception 1: Install from Network or Shared Location

The prerelease message does not appear when:
  • You install Beta 2 and choose Run all from CD.

    -and-
  • You eject the Beta 2 disc from the CD-ROM drive.

    -and-
  • You install the released version from a location such as a network drive, or flat file copy of the CD-ROM.
Because your Beta 2 disc is not in the CD-ROM drive, Setup cannot locate the disc, and the search silently fails, allowing Setup to continue.

Exception 2: Run All from CD

The prerelease message does not appear when:
  • You install Beta 2 and choose Run all from CD.

    -and-
  • You eject the Beta 2 disc from the CD-ROM drive.

    -and-
  • You install the released version from the CD-ROM.
Because your Beta 2 disc is not in the CD-ROM drive, Setup cannot locate the disc, and the search silently fails, allowing Setup to continue. Because Office is registered as being on the CD-ROM drive, Setup finds the released version of Office in the CD-ROM and does not display the alert. However, when you restart Windows, a blue screen with an error message similar to the following may appear:
Error reading CD-ROM in drive D:
For more information about this error message, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Exception 3: Change Install Location

The prerelease message does not appear when:
  • You install Beta 2 CD1 and choose Run all from CD.

    -and-
  • You install Beta 2 CD2 and choose Run all from CD.

    -and-
  • You run Setup in Maintenance mode and change the install location for CD1 to Run all from my computer.

    -and-
  • You uninstall Beta 2 CD1.

    -and-
  • You install the released version of Office, leaving Beta 2 CD2 installed to run from the disc.
NOTE: The same problem occurs when you change the install location for CD1 with CD2 installed to Run all from CD.

Resolution

Because Setup does not detect the prerelease version of Office, the Setup program continues. To successfully install the released version of Office, first remove the Beta 2 version of Office. To remove Office 2000 Beta 2:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.
  2. Click to select Microsoft Office 2000 Premium Edition in the list, and click Add/Remove.
  3. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Remove Office.
  4. If you are prompted to restart Windows, do so.
