Cause

This problem occurs when your Temp folder setting points to a removable drive. To verify whether these variables exist or whether they are pointing to invalid directories, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.
  2. At the command prompt, type SET and press ENTER. All of the environment variables are displayed. You should see something similar to the following:
    TMP=path\TEMP
    TEMP=path\TEMP
    where path is a drive letter and path.
  3. To close the command prompt, type Exit and then press ENTER.

Workaround

To work around this problem, follow these steps to change your Temp folder setting to point to a fixed drive:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type sysedit and then click OK. This starts the System Configuration Editor.
  3. On the Window menu, click Autoexec.bat.
  4. Add the following lines to the end of your Autoexec.bat file:
    Set Temp=fixed drive letter:\path\Temp

    Set Tmp=fixed drive letter:\path\Temp
    where fixed drive letter is a valid drive letter of one of your fixed drives, and path is a valid path to a folder named "Temp" on your computer.

    For example, you can add the following line:
    Set Temp=C:\Windows\temp
  5. On the File menu, click Save.
  6. Click Exit on the File menu.
  7. Restart your computer, and then run Office 2000 Setup.
