No sound is played when you play a video file that is converted from a PowerPoint 2013 or PowerPoint 2010 file that contains a sound file

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You have a Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 or PowerPoint 2010 presentation that contains a sound file. The format of the sound file is one of the following:
  • .mid
  • .midi
  • .rmi
You convert the presentation to a video file. Then, you play the video file. In this scenario, no sound is played. In PowerPoint 2013, you may also receive the error "Some of the media in this presentation cannot be included in the video. Do you want to continue without including the media?"

Cause

This problem occurs because DirectShow Editing Services cannot convert the sound file data to video data.

Workaround

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Convert the sound file to one of the following formats by using an audio file conversion tool:
    • .wav
    • .mp3
  2. Insert the file into a PowerPoint 2013 or PowerPoint 2010 presentation.
  3. Convert the presentation to a video file.
  4. Play the video file.
