You cannot browse any data that is written to a DVD-R disc in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008 after you eject and then reinsert the disc

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You use the media writing feature of Windows to burn a DVD-R disc by using the Live File System format.
  • You write some data to the formatted disc, and then you eject the disc after you finish the write operation.
  • You insert and eject the disc few more times. And you read and write some data in this disc every time.
In this scenario, the disk is displayed as empty. You cannot browse any data that is written to the disc.

Cause

The issue occurs because the universal drive format (UDF) file system driver (udfs.sys) does not prepare an appropriate session if the driver receives an interleaved read request during session preparation.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
