You use an Office application on your computer to open a document on a SharePoint Server. For example, you try to co-author a document in Word, or to access it from Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010. Instead of opening the document that you wanted to open, a prior document is opened.

- The document that was opened was previously opened and then closed by using Microsoft Office 2010 Upload Center. This behavior occurs before you try to open the second document.
- The file names of the two documents differ only by a few characters, and at least one of these characters is not included in the Basic Latin character set. For example, the two file names each contain one of the following characters:
- the Latin uppercase letter "I" with a dot above it: "İ"
- the Latin lowercase letter "i"
