The SNMP service does not respond to any SNMP requests after a Group Policy refresh in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) service on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You manually update the Group Policy settings on this computer. Or, the settings are automatically refreshed.

In this scenario, the SNMP service may not respond to the SNMP requests. Additionally, you have to restart the SNMP service to recover from this issue.

Cause

This issue occurs because the SNMP service cannot access some registry keys at a certain time when the Group Policy settings are refreshed. This certain time is the delay between when some registry keys are deleted and when the registry keys are recreated. However, the SNMP service does not retry to register the registry key change notification. Therefore, the SNMP service cannot read these registry keys after they are recreated and rejects all SNMP requests.

Note The SNMP service registers a registry key change notification when its service starts.
