Error message when you delete a folder that contains content on a client computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008: "This operation can only be performed when you are connected to the network"

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are in an Active Directory domain environment.
  • You implement the feature of folder redirection on a client computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You redirect several folders. For example, you redirect folders such as Desktop Documents and Favorites to a file server.
  • You allow for the client to configure the folders that should be available offline by using the Group Policy "Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline".
In this scenario, the client receives the following error message when they try to delete a folder that contains content:
This operation can only be performed when you are connected to the network.

Additionally, the folder cannot be deleted.

Hotfix information

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods to delete the folder that contains content.

Method 1

Press SHIFT + DELETE to delete the folder permanently.

Note SHIFT + DELETE does not involve the Recycle Bin.

Method 2

Delete the folder from the elevated command prompt.
