A Web site does not run in the expected security zone in Internet Explorer 7 after you install hotfix KB939940

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install hotfix KB939940 and enable the FEATURE_ZONES_WILDCARD_PRECEDENCE_KB939940 registry key for Windows Internet Explorer 7.
  • You add two site addresses ("site 1" and "site 2") to different security zones. Both site addresses contain a wildcard character and the same suffix.
  • "Site 1" is nested in the namespace of "site 2."
  • In Internet Explorer 7, you open a URL that has the same suffix as "site 1" and "site 2."
In this scenario, Internet Explorer 7 does not map the URL to the correct security zone.

For example, you add the *.subdomain.domain.com site address to the Local intranet security zone. Then, you add the *.domain.com site address to the Trusted sites security zone. When you access the http://server.subdomain.domain.com Web site, you expect the Web site to run in the Local intranet security zone. However, the status bar of Internet Explorer 7 indicates that the Web site is running in the Trusted sites security zone.
