Windows Media Photo encoder generates a lossless compressed image instead of a lossy compressed image as expected

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You have a computer that is running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008. On this computer, you use Windows Media Photo encoder to generate a lossy compressed version of an image. In this scenario, the image is compressed under the lossless coding mode. Therefore, the size of the generated image file is much larger than expected.

Note This issue only affects the following image formats: 16 bits per pixel (bpp) integer grayscale, CMYK, or N-Channel.
