You receive an error when you try to create a Unified Messaging Auto Attendant in the Exchange Management Console: "The pilotidentifier 'string value' is not a valid extension"

Symptoms

In Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 or in Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, you try to create a Unified Messaging (UM) Auto Attendant in the Exchange Management Console. Then, you receive the following error message:
Error: The pilotidentifier 'string value' is not a valid extension.
After you receive this error, you cannot create the Auto Attendant.

Cause

This issue occurs when the UM Auto Attendant uses Telephone Extension as the URI Type for the UM Dial Plan, and the pilotidentifier parameter contains nonnumeric string characters. The URI Type for Telephone Extension can only accept numeric strings as pilotidentifier parameter values.

Resolution

You must use numeric characters for the pilotidentifier parameter values when you create an UM Auto Attendant that uses Telephone Extension as the URI Type for the UM Dial Plan.
