Stop error code when you enable shadow copies on a volume that is larger than 64 terabytes on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista: "0x0000007E"

On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista, you receive the following Stop error message when you enable shadow copies on a volume that is larger than 64 terabytes:

• The four parameters that are in this error message depend on the configuration of the computer.
• Not all "0x0000007E" Stop error codes are caused by this problem.

The Volume Shadow Copy driver (Volsnap.sys) supports a maximum volume size of 64 terabytes to create a snapshot. When this limitation is reached, a Stop error code is incorrectly triggered.

To resolve this issue, apply this hotfix. After you apply this hotfix, the following event is logged when you try to enable shadow copies on a volume that is larger than 64 terabytes:

Source: volsnap
Type: Warning
Description: Volume drive letter is not supported. Only Volume sizes less than 64TB - 8GB are supported with this version of Shadow copy. Please retry with a valid volume size.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
