Error message when you try to connect to a virtual private network (VPN) server on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008: "STOP 0x0000007F"

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You try to connect to a virtual private network (VPN) server that is using Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. You receive a Stop error message on a blue screen and the computer crashes. The Stop error message resembles the following:
STOP 0x0000007F (00000008, <Paremeter2>, <Paremeter3>, <Paremeter4>)

Cause

This problem occurs because the system enters a loop when it processes the L2TP package. This behavior causes a stack overflow and then the computer crashes.

If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes

  • The files that apply to a specific product or milestone (RTM, SPn) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
    VersionProductMilestoneService branch
    6.0.6000.20xxxWindows VistaRTMLDR
    6.0.6001.22xxxWindows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1SP1LDR
    6.0.6002.22xxxWindows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2SP2LDR
  • The first release of Windows Server 2008 contains Service Pack (SP1). Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and MUM files (.mum) installed for each environment are listed separately . MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
