"Terminal Session" targeting item does not work for a Group Policy preferences setting on a client computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a Group Policy preferences setting in a Group Policy object (GPO).
  • You enable the Item-level targeting option for the Group Policy preferences setting.
  • You create a Terminal Session targeting item in the Targeting Editor window and define the targeting item.
  • You log on to a terminal server session from a client computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista and that meets the settings for the targeting item.
In this scenario, the Terminal Session targeting item does not work. Therefore, the Group Policy preferences setting is not applied on the computer correctly.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Group Policy preferences client-side engine does not use the session of the current user as the current session.

When the client-side engine for Group Policy preferences handles the item-level targeting options for Terminal Session, the engine tries to match the terminal server session information by using the current session information. However, the engine does not use the session of the current user as the current session. The engine incorrectly uses the session of the Group Policy Client service as the current session. Therefore, the item-level targeting options for Terminal Session are not applied to the expected terminal server sessions.
