A parallel backup operation may fail when the operation is performed by Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)

When Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) performs a parallel backup operation on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008, the operation may fail. When this issue occurs, the VSS writers are in a "corrupted" state, and the VSS writers return the following error message:

For example, you may encounter this issue when you use System Center Data Protection Manager to perform a parallel backup operation.

Parallel backups that use VSS are not reliable because of an issue in VSS writers.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 updates are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the "Hotfix Request" page.
