Symptoms

You view a Web page in Windows Internet Explorer 7 or in Windows Internet Explorer 8. This Web page supports drag-and-drop operations. When you try to drop an object in the Web page, Internet Explorer crashes. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Cause

This issue occurs during a drag-and-drop operation because of an access violation that occurs in the Anchor element.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
