Error message when you use the MBSA tool to check for weak passwords or to assess password security on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista: "Some user accounts have blank or simple passwords, or could not be analyzed"

Consider the following scenario:

• You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2).
• You use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) tool to check for weak passwords or to assess password security.

In this scenario, you receive the following error message together with the error code 1721:

This problem occurs because two backward slashes (\\) are incorrectly added to the computer name as a prefix. However, when the MBSA tool uses this incorrect computer name for a secure remote procedure call (RPC), the RPC fails.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To apply this hotfix, the computer must be running one of the following operating systems:

• Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
• Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
• Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
• Windows Server 2008

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

• Service Pack 1 is integrated into the original release of Windows Server 2008.
• GDR service branches contain only fixes that are broadly released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to broadly released fixes.
• The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
