Unread messages are marked as "read" when Exchange Server 2007 processes the EXAMINE command

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use an application to connect to a mailbox through the IMAP4 protocol.
  • You use the Examine command to access folders.

In this scenario, the mailbox is accessed in read-only mode and changes to the state of the inbox cannot be made. Therefore, the unread messages that are synchronized to the application are still marked as unread." However, the synchronized messages are marked as read although the messages were not read if you use the application to connect to a mailbox that is located on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 server.
