Symptoms

When you move a mailbox across a forest by using the move-mailbox commandlet, the commandlet may fail, and you may receive the following error message:
Failed to set the AD attributes on target user with error: A constraint violation occurred. error code: -1056749203

Cause

This issue occurs when the secretary attribute is populated on the user object. The secretary attribute is not set or used by Microsoft Exchange Server and was likely populated manually or by a third-party program.

Workaround

To work around this issue, clear the secretary attribute on the user object by using ADSI Edit. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open ADSI Edit.
  2. Connect to the Default naming context.
  3. Navigate to the user object of the mailbox that is failing to move.
  4. Right-click the object, and then click Properties.
  5. Select the Secretary attribute, and then click edit.
  6. Click Remove, and then click OK.
  7. Close ADSI Edit.
