The temporary Internet file cache grows without a limit when a Silverlight application continues to run in Internet Explorer

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When a Silverlight application makes Web service calls to Web resources without moving away from the current Web page, the temporary Internet file (TIF) cache will grow without a limit. Eventually, the hard disk will fill up. This issue occurs in Internet Explorer 7 and in Internet Explorer 6.

Cause

This issue occurs because the scavenger thread that empties the TIF cache does not run unless you browse to another page. If you remain on a single page that is running a Silverlight application, and a Silverlight application downloads Web content, Web resources are stored in the TIF cache. In this scenario the TIF cache will grow without a limit.
