A move operation between an Exchange Server 2003-based server and an Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1-based server fails if the SimpleDisplayName attribute of a mailbox in the Exchange Server 2003-based server contains a single quotation mark

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario.You try to move a mailbox between an Exchange Server 2003-based server and an Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based server. However, if the SimpleDisplayName attribute of an Exchange Server 2003 mailbox contains a single quotation mark ('), and you try to move this mailbox to the Exchange Server 2007 SP1-based server, the operation fails and you receive the following error message:

<SimpleDisplayName of the user> is not a valid value for SimpleDisplayName. The value may only contain 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e', 'f', 'g', 'h', 'i', 'j', 'k', 'l', 'm', 'n', 'o', 'p', 'q', 'r', 's', 't', 'u', 'v', 'w', 'x', 'y','z', 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E', 'F', 'G', 'H', 'I', 'J', 'K', 'L', 'M', 'N', 'O', 'P', 'Q', 'R', 'S', 'T', 'U', 'V', 'W', 'X', 'Y', 'Z', '0', '1', '2', '3', '4','5', '6', '7', '8', '9', '"', '(', ')', '+', ',', '-', '.', '/', ':', '?', ' '. It was running the command 'move-mailbox -TargetDatabase '<Exchange 2007 server> \ <Storage Group name> \ <Mailbox Database name>''.


Note This error message resembles the error message that you receive when you move a mailbox in Exchange Management Console or run the Move-Mailbox command in Exchange Management Shell.

Cause

The single quotation mark (') is a valid character in the SimpleDisplayName attribute in Exchange Server 2003. However, it is not considered as a valid character in Exchange Server 2007 SP1.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install Update Rollup 9 for Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1.
