Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 crashes when the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) version store is out of memory on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) crashes on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 and you find the following errors in the Application event log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESE
Event Category: Transaction Manager 
Event ID: 623
Description:
Information Store (ID) xxxx: The version store for this instance (0) has reached its maximum size of xxxMb. It is likely that a 
long-running transaction is preventing cleanup of the version store and causing it to build up in size. Updates will be rejected 
until the long-running transaction has been completely committed or rolled back. 
Possible long-running transaction: 
SessionId: xxxx

Session-context ThreadId: xxxx
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store
Event Category: Logons 
Event ID: 1022
Description:
Logon Failure on database "xxxx" - Windows 2000 account xxxx;

As a result, client access and message delivery are suspended for the affected Exchange Server 2007 SP1 server. Therefore, you have to restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service to resolve the problem.

The version store is where the Exchange Information Store service keeps records of transactions that are not yet finished. The version store gives the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) the ability to track and manage current transactions. The version store has a list of operations that are performed by active transactions. This is an in-memory list of modifications made to the database.
