Improved handling of the warning when you try to save a document in the encrypted binary file format in Word 2007, Excel 2007, or PowerPoint 2007 on a computer that has the 2007 Microsoft Office suite SP2 installed

Symptoms

When you save a document in the encrypted binary file format in a 2007 Microsoft Office system, you receive the following message:

This document is both encrypted and password protected. The Office Open XML Formats available in the 2007 release provide stronger encryption. Do you want to increase the security of this document by converting to an Office Open XML Format
If you click Yes on this message, you receive the message the next time that you save a document in the encrypted binary file format. Additionally, if you press CTRL+SHIFT+I, Alert ID 701726 is displayed in the lower-right corner of the message dialog box.

You apply the 2007 Microsoft Office suite Service Pack 2 (SP2). If you click No on the message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, you no longer receive the message when you save a document in the encrypted binary file format. This sets the value of the NoPromptForRC4Encryption registry key to 1. In earlier versions of the 2007 Office suite SP2, you had to set the value manually. The registry key is located under the following registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Security

To bring the prompt back, you can change the value of the NoPromptForRC4Encryption registry key to 0 or delete the registry key. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Security\
  3. Right-click NoPromptForRC4Encryption, and then use one of the following steps:
    • Click Modify, in the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
    • Click Delete, and then click Yes.
  4. Exit Registry Editor.
The term "binary file format" refers to the previous file formats that are used in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Binary file format extensions:
  • Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls)
  • Excel 97-2003 Template (*.xlt)
  • PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation (*.ppt)
  • PowerPoint 97-2003 Template (*.pot)
  • Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)
  • Word 97-2003 Template (*.dot)
The term "open XML format" refers to the new formats in Word 2007, Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Make sure that the NoPromptForRC4Encryption registry key does not exist under the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Security
    If it exists, delete it or change its value to 0.
  2. Start PowerPoint 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button
    , point to Save As, and then click PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation.
  3. Select a path for the document, type a name in the File name box, and then click Save.
  4. Click the Microsoft Office Button
    , point to Prepare, and then click Encrypt Document.
  5. In the Encrypt Document dialog box, in the Password box, type a password, and then click OK.
  6. In the Confirm Password dialog box, type the password again in the Re-enter password box, and then click OK.
  7. Click the Microsoft Office Button
    , and then click Save.
Note You can also encrypt the document. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button
    , and then click Save As.
  2. At the bottom of the Save As dialog box, click Tools, and then click General Options.
  3. Under File encryption options for this document, type a password in the Password to open box, and then click OK.
  4. In the Confirm Password dialog box, type the password again in the Re-enter password box, and then click OK.
  5. Click the Microsoft Office Button
    , and then click Save.
