After you restrict the Maximum Message Send Size value for a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007
organization by using the
Set-TransportConfig cmdlet, Microsoft Outlook
clients cannot send messages that are larger than the specified size. However,
some old version Outlook clients, such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or earlier, do
not recognize the restriction. Therefore, a large message will be submitted to
an Exchange 2007 server if the clients are running in Cache mode.
In these cases, the
Exchange server will generate the following Non Delivery Report (NDR) message that has the original
e-mail attached:
#550 5.2.3 RESOLVER.RST.RecipSizeLimit;
message too large for this recipient ##
Note This NDR indicates that the message size
exceeds restrictions.
Under certain conditions, if a message is
large or if there is a high volume of these message, you may notice the following performance issues:
- Slow response for message processing and client
access
- Database and transaction logs that grow rapidly
- Version Store issued on the Transport servers
Note The Version Store is an allocation of memory in which database
transactions are held until they can be written to the disk. For Transport servers,
the message delivery is very slow and may be stopped if almost all the Version Store memory has been used.
