You cannot change the file properties for a Word document, Excel workbook, or PowerPoint presentation when the file in posted on a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library or on a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 document library

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a new Microsoft Word document, Microsoft Excel workbook, or Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.
  • You add a custom property to the file.
  • You upload the file to a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library or to a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 document library.
  • In the document library, you click the file and then click Edit Properties.
  • You type a new value for the property and then click OK.
In this scenario, the value for the file property may not change as expected.

Cause

This problem occurs when all the following conditions are true:
  • The custom property that you added has the same name as a built-in property. For example, you create a custom property that is named "Subject."
  • A column in the document library has the same name as the custom property and the built-in property. For example, you create a column in the document library that is named "Subject."

Workaround

To work around this problem, check out the file from the document library and remove the custom property that has the same name as the built-in property. Then, check the file back into the document library.
