A Windows-based portable computer does not resume correctly if you close the lid while the computer is asleep

Consider the following scenario. You have a portable computer that runs Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008. You put the computer to sleep (S3) while the computer's lid is open. Then, you close the lid while the computer is asleep. Later, you open the lid to wake up the computer.

In this scenario, the computer starts resuming. However, you only see a blank screen and a mouse pointer until you provide some user input. For example, this situation lasts until you press a key or click the mouse.

Note This problem occurs only on certain computers.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. To apply this hotfix, you must have one of the following operating systems installed on the computer:

• Windows Vista with Service Pack 1
• Windows Server 2008
• Windows 7

Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
