The Test-OwaConnectivity command returns a warning message in Exchange Server 2007 when there is a disjoint namespace

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • In a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 environment, the NetBIOS domain name does not match the first part of the fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
  • Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access is configured to use an authentication method other than forms-based authentication (FBA).
  • You run the Test-OwaConnectivity command to verify that Outlook Web Access is running correctly.
In this scenario, the Test-OwaConnectivity command returns the following error message:
WARNING: The test was unable to log on to Outlook Web Access because of an authentication failure. URL: xxxx Mailbox: xxxx User: xxxx WARNING: The test for URL 'xxxx' failed.

Cause

This issue occurs because Exchange Server rebuilds the network credential and uses only the NetBIOS domain name when non-FBA authentication methods are used. Authentication fails because the NetBIOS domain name does not match the FQDN in a disjoint namespace scenario.
