You receive a "Synchronization cannot continue unless Exchange Server security policies are applied" message on a Windows Mobile 6-based device that's connected to Exchange Online

Problem

When you click Start, and then click Messaging on a Windows Mobile 6-based device that's connected to Exchange Online in Office 365, you receive the following message:
Exchange Server
Synchronized: None
In the message, you click Attention required, and then you receive the following message:
Synchronization cannot continue unless Exchange Server security policies are applied. To apply them, start synchronization and accept the policy change on the device.
In the message, you click View Support Code, and the following support code is displayed:
0x8503002C

Cause

This issue occurs if Exchange Online security policies aren't applied on the Windows Mobile 6-based device.

Solution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Mobile 6-based device, click Start, click Messaging, and then click Sync.

    You receive the following message:
    Exchange Server server_name must enforce security policies on your device to continue synchronizing. Do you want to continue?
  2. Click OK.
