After you migrate an On-Premise Active Directory Distribution Group to an Exchange Online environment Distribution Group in Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite, the original owner may be unable to configure or manage the Distribution Group.

This behavior occurs because the Ownership entry is not migrated. You experience this behavior if the original owner was someone other than the Administrator of the Exchange Online environment.

All Online Company Administrators have the Ownership role. Therefore, the Administrator can manage the Distribution Groups whether they are newly created or are migrated into the Online environment.

On-Premise Active Directory Distribution Groups include Security Principal lists that outline the different roles and permissions available for a mail-enabled Distribution Group. In addition to the other default roles, the Ownership entry displays who owns the management features of the Distribution Group.
