Description of the Excel 2007 hotfix package (Excel.msp, Xlconv.msp): August 26, 2008

List of issues that this hotfix package fixes

This hotfix fixes the following issues that are not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

• When you use the Excel 2007 XLL Software Development Kit, you cannot obtain strings that have more than 255 characters by using certain built-in functions such as the xlfRtd function or the xlCoerce function.
  
  
• You cannot call a VBA macro by using an Excel4 function or an Excel12 function that uses the xlcRun parameter.
  
  
• After you store an add-in in a trusted location, macros that are in an Excel 2007 file run without any notifications even if the Disable all macros with notification option is enabled.
  
  
• Consider the following scenario. You create a connection in a new Excel 2007 Service Pack 1 worksheet. You try to import external data from an .xls file that is hosted on a Web site by using the connection. In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
  The Microsoft Office Access database engine could not find the object 'Sheet1$'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and path name correctly.
• You make some specific changes to double-byte character set (DBCS) characters in an Excel 2007 Service Pack 1 workbook. For example, you change the font of the DBCS characters. Then, you save the changes, and you close Excel 2007. When you reopen the file in Excel 2007, you may receive the following error message:
  Excel found unreadable content in 'file_name.xls'. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes.
  After you click Yes, you receive the following warning message:
  Excel recovered your formulas and cell values, but some data may have been lost.
• It takes several minutes to save .xlsb files that contain many VLOOKUP functions if the functions are linked to other .xlsb files.
  
  
• Some cells in an Excel 2007 workbook are updated incorrectly when the source file is an .xlsb file. This problem occurs without any notifications.
  
  
• Consider the following scenario:
  • You have an Excel 2007 worksheet that has some series in a chart.
  • The series in the chart have different chart types. For example, one series is a bar type, and the other series is a line type.
  • You delete a legend item of a series from the chart.
  • You save and then close the worksheet.
  • You reopen the worksheet.
  In this scenario, Some legend items may be missing, and the legend items that were deleted previously may be displayed.
  
  
• After you apply hotfix 948944, Excel 2007 may stop responding when you try to close Excel 2007. This problem occurs when you perform the following actions:
  • You set Excel 97 - 2003 Workbook .xls as the default file type.
  • You open an .xlt file, or you use an .xlt file as a template.
  
  
• You paste a picture as an enhanced metafile into a workbook in Excel 2007. You save the worksheet in the Excel 97-2003 Workbook format. When you view the print preview for the file in Excel 2003, the scale settings that you set in Excel 2007 are lost.
  
• You cannot set a string that has more than 255 characters in Excel 2007 XLL SDK.
  
  Note After you apply this hotfix, you can set a long string by using several commands in Excel 2007 XLL SDK. For example, you can use the xlSet function or the xlcFormula function.
  
• 974070 The changes that you made to a shared .xls file in an offline folder are not saved

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
