Troubleshoot installing Intellipoint, IntelliType, or LifeCam software

Symptoms

When you try to install Microsoft IntelliPoint, Microsoft IntelliType Pro, or Microsoft LifeCam programs, you receive one of the following error messages:

  • Setup cannot continue because either there is insufficient disk space or an unexpected error has occurred. Please free the necessary disk space, and run setup again. For system requirements, refer to the product packaging.
  • Error 1603: A fatal error occurred during installation.
  • Installation error

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps in the order in which they are presented. You must be logged on to your computer as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

Note: This issue may occur if you have upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. If you have upgraded and none of the steps in this article resolves the issue, you may need to reinstall Windows 7.


Method 1: Remove earlier versions of the program, and then install the latest version

Step 1: Remove the program from Control Panel

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. On a computer that is running Windows XP, copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
    appwiz.cpl
    On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, click StartStart button , type appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box, and then click appwiz.cpl in the Programs list.

    User Account Control permission
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, determine whether an existing version of IntelliPoint, IntelliType Pro, or LifeCam is listed.
  4. If an existing version of the program is listed, click the program entry, and then click Remove. Follow the instructions to remove the software.
  5. If you are prompted, restart the computer.

Step 2: Download and install the latest programs or drivers for your hardware device

Note Before you install the latest software, make sure that other programs are closed. In the lower-right corner of the desktop, right-click one icon at a time to either disable the program or exit the program.

Install the IntelliPoint, IntelliType Pro, or LifeCam programs from the following Microsoft Web site:If the problem continues to occur, go to method 2.

Method 3: Verify that the Windows Installer service is set to Automatic

  1. Windows Vista or Windows 7

    Click Start Start button , type services.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

    User Account Control permission
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    Windows XP and earlier versions

    Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the Services list, double-click Windows Installer.
  3. In the Windows Installer Properties dialog box, click Automatic in the Startup type list.
  4. Click Start, click Apply, and then click OK.
  5. Start the software installation.
If the problem continues to occur, go to method 4

Method 4: Perform a clean startup and clear Temp folder

When you start Windows as usual, some programs start automatically and run in the background. These programs may include antivirus programs and system programs that may interfere with product installation. When you perform a clean startup before you start the installation, you prevent these programs from starting automatically. To perform a clean startup, follow the appropriate steps for your Windows version.

Step 1: Restart the computer by using a clean startup

Note To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure.
  1. Open System Configuration.

    Windows Vista or Windows 7
    1. Click Start Start button
    2. In the Start Search box, type System Configuration.
    3. In the Programs list, click System Configuration.

      User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    Windows XP and earlier versions
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click Run.
    3. In the Open box, type msconfig.
    4. Click OK.


  2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  3. Windows Vista or Windows 7

    Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Load system services
    • Load startup items
    • Use original boot configuration
    Windows XP and earlier versions

    Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process SYSTEM.INI File
    • Process WIN.INI File
    • Load Startup Items
  4. Click the Services tab.
  5. Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  6. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 2: Clear the Temp folder

To clear the temporary file folder, follow these steps:

Windows Vista or Windows 7
  1. On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start Start button , type %temp% in the Start Search box, and then click Temp in the Programs list.

    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  3. On the File menu, click Delete.
  4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  5. Try to start the IntelliPoint, IntelliType Pro, or LifeCam program. If you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, delete the program, and then reinstall the program.
Windows XP and earlier versions
  1. Click Start, click Run, type %temp%, and then click OK.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  3. On the File menu, click Delete.
  4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  5. Try to start the IntelliPoint, IntelliType Pro, or LifeCam program. If you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, delete the program, and then reinstall the program.
If the problem continues to occur, go to method 5.

Method 5:Uninstall Windows Installer, and then install the latest version

Note Windows Installer (3SI) is the application installation and configuration service for Windows. These download packages will update the version of Windows Installer on the computer to version 4.5.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
    appwiz.cpl
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, select Windows Installer (KB893803).
  4. Click Remove, and then follow the instructions to remove Windows Installer.
  5. To install the latest Windows Installer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:Note Download the .msi file for your version of Windows. x86 means that you have a 32-bit version of Windows, and x64 means that you have a 64-bit version. If you are not sure, download and install the x64-based version. In the "Instructions," you will find information about which file to use for the operating system.

Method 6: Install the Microsoft .NET Framework

If the problem continues to occur, install the latest version of the .NET Framework. To this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:Click Install it now, and then follow the instructions.

The software uses .NET Framework to connect to the server to download information for the product.
