IPP does not support multiple operating system .inf files on a print server that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows XP

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a print server that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows XP.
  • You try to create Point and Print client driver download packages for drivers that have multiple operating system .inf files.
However, the operation fails because the Internet Printer Protocol (IPP) does not support this functionality.

Cause

This issue occurs because additional files that are listed for operating systems that differ from the print server's operating system are not copied to the print server. Therefore, when a client computer connects to a print server, and that client computer is using a different operating system from the print server's, the version files that are listed in the .inf file are not located on the print server. Therefore, the packaging attempt fails.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Manually copy the missing files to the print server.
  • Use a single operating system .inf file that copies all the necessary files to the print server.
