Internet Explorer automatically changes top-level domains (TLDs) when you add them to the "Trusted sites" security zone or to the "Restricted sites" security zone

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running Windows Internet Explorer 7 or in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.
  • You add top-level domains (TLDs) to the "Trusted sites" security zone or to the "Restricted sites" security zone.
In this scenario, Internet Explorer automatically changes the TLDs. For example, if you try to add http://*.com, Internet Explorer changes the entry to http://*.*.com. Additionally, the TLD is not applied for that security zone.

Cause

Microsoft specifically prevents this behavior because security risks are involved when you use TLDs for the security zones in Internet Explorer.
