Error message when you try to install Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1: "The E-mail Address Policy object must have exactly one primary e-mail address with the prefix 'FAXMAKER'"

Symptoms

On a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007-based computer, you may receive the following error message when you try to install Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1):
The E-mail Address Policy object must have exactly one primary e-mail address with the prefix "FAXMAKER".

Cause

This problem occurs because a legacy entry for GFI FAXmaker exists in the disabledGatewayProxy attribute in the E-mail Address Policy object properties.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type adsiedit.msc, and then press ENTER.
  3. In CN=Configuration container, locate the following container:
    CN=Services,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=ORGANIZATION,CN=Recipient Policies
  4. In the details pane, right-click the problem recipient policy, and then click Properties.
  5. In the Attribute list, click disabledGatewayProxy, and then click Edit.
  6. In the Value box, remove the entry for GFI FAXmaker, and then click OK two times.
  7. Replicate the Active Directory directory service.
