The Edgetransport.exe process may crash on an Edge server that is running Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1

Symptoms

On an Edge server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you run the following PowerShell cmdlet:
Set-AttachmentFilterListConfig -RejectResponse "Test with non-ASCII characters"
When you do this, the Edgetransport.exe process may crash.

Note In this cmdlet, non-ASCII characters is a placeholder for characters such as the following characters:
Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchange Common
Event Category: General
Event ID: 4999
Description:

Watson report about to be sent to dw20.exe for process id: 2316, with parameters: E12, c-RTL-x86, 08.01.0222.002, edgetransport, unknown, M.E.D.T.S.SmtpResponse.ctor, System.FormatException, d4ed, unknown. ErrorReportingEnabled: False

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install Update Rollup 2 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 on the server.

Workaround

To work around this problem, rerun the same PowerShell command without the non-ASCII characters.
