The IMAP service returns an untagged EXISTS response before the EXPUNGE command in Exchange Server 2007

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you run the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) service in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 organization, the IMAP service returns an untagged EXISTS response before the EXPUNGE command.

For example, you select a folder that has 10 e-mail messages. You mark the last message as deleted. Then, you expunge the last e-mail message. In this situation, the results resemble the following.
* EXISTS 9
* EXPUNGE 10
1 EXPUNGE complete
However, the results should resemble the following.
* EXPUNGE 10
* EXISTS 9
1 EXPUNGE complete
Notes
  • The EXPUNGE command orders the server to delete all messages that are marked for deletion in the current mailbox.
  • This problem affects mostly Pine e-mail client users when the users delete mail items. Additionally, other e-mail clients may be affected.
