View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. The free/busy folder resides on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 cluster server. Additionally, the free/busy folder contains many e-mail messages. Typically, the number of messages is more than 100,000 messages. In this scenario, when you use a Microsoft Office Outlook client to try to access the free/busy folder, the IsAlive check fails. Additionally, the Exchange 2003 cluster server fails over.

Cause

This problem occurs when the Exchange 2003 server processes a free/busy query. The Exchange 2003 server builds another table in the public folder store for the free/busy query. Additionally, the Exchange 2003 server holds a lock on the free/busy folder. When you try to access the locked free/busy folder, all Outlook clients are blocked. Eventually, the Outlook clients exhaust all available remote procedure call (RPC) threads. Therefore, the IsAlive check fails. Additionally, the Exchange 2003 cluster server fails over.
